Gary Lineker believes Marc Guehi was confused by rule he broke in Crystal Palace defeat

Marc Guehi's actions during Crystal Palace's defeat to Brentford had Gary Lineker convinced he might have got his wires crossed on the rules. During Sunday's match at Selhurst Park, a foul by Maxence Lacroix on Nathan Collins gave Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo the opportunity from the spot. However, the Cameroonian appeared to have spurned the opportunity after hitting the post.
Palace skipper Guehi seemed to have saved his team-mate initially as he got to the rebound first and cleared the ball. However, the replay showed the England star had entered the semi-circle too early and was rightly deemed guilty of encroachment. The Rest Is Football co-analyst Micah Richards delved into the penalty incident before Lineker chimed in about Guehi's involvement (via football.london). The ex-Tottenham star said: "It was interesting with Marc Guehi because he did encroach, didn't he? Just before.
"I just wonder whether he thought perhaps - I don't know - because he went in the semi-circle, didn't he? And I wonder whether he thought that was okay, because 'I'm still outside the lateral line of the penalty area.' I don't know, but it was the right call in the end.".
The Premier League revised the encroachment law ahead of the 2024/25 season, stipulating that a player is only deemed to be encroaching if they have a "material impact on the outcome of the kick." It's also now been outlined that even having one's foot on the of the box or semi-circle is deemed to be "inside the box.".
The semi-circle is considered part of the penalty area, and since Guehi violated this law to position himself for his clearance, a second penalty had to be awarded. A re-take can also be ordered if an attacking player influences the play when their team-mate is taking a penalty.
