Gary Neville says Ruben Amorim may be ‘targeting’ Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho in order to ‘wrestle control’ at Manchester United, just as Sir Alex Ferguson did with several high-profile players across his illustrious reign. Once the focal point of United’s attack and a poster boy for the academy, Rashford, 27, has not featured in the Red Devils’ last seven games and has seemingly been frozen out by Amorim.

Having suffered a drastic decline in form, Rashford outlined his desire for a ‘new challenge’ last month – and the forward now looks certain to have played his final match for United, the club he joined at the age of just seven. AC Milan have asserted themselves as the clear frontrunners to secure a loan deal for Rashford, while the likes of Galatasaray, Borussia Dortmund, Como and West Ham have also been credited with an interest in recent days.

Garnacho had been viewed as another of United’s few untouchable players but there is mounting speculation that the 20-year-old could be set to follow Rashford out the Old Trafford exit door this winter. The latest reports suggest United would be open to selling Garnacho to Napoli, though are holding out for a fee in the region of £70million for the Argentina international this January.

Speaking on The Overlap US’ It’s Called Soccer podcast, ex-United defender Neville said it would not ‘surprise’ him to see both players leave the Theatre of Dreams. ‘It’s been in the news in the last 24 hours that bids are coming in for Garnacho, there’s been new stories about Rashford going on loan or to another club, it genuinely wouldn’t surprise me if Ruben Amorim made these big types of calls,’ Neville said.
