GLASGOW 33 EDINBURGH 14: Hampden witnesses another humbling as Warriors turn on the style to leave shell-shocked derby rivals trailing in their wake

Hampden has certainly witnessed its fair share of hammerings and humblings down the years. And a first rugby contest at the home of Scottish football for 20 years produced another one-sided beating, even if Edinburgh did salvage a sliver of pride by scoring two late tries that put a sheen of respectability on the scoreboard and made the contest look closer than had actually been the case.
Glasgow head coach Franco Smith was naturally frustrated by those concessions but, otherwise, there was plenty to admire about his team who ran in five tries to place one hand on the 1872 Cup ahead of Saturday’s return at Murrayfield. Edinburgh have already sold more than 30,000 tickets for that one although more than a few will now head to the game with an air of trepidation given how poorly their team played here for most of the match as Glasgow claimed a bonus-point URC victory.
Talk that the ‘neutral’ venue, a blustery wind and a soft grass pitch would prove a leveller proved to be well wide of the mark. The reigning URC champions against a side who’ve not won outside of their own Hive Stadium for eight months was very much the mismatch that form and pedigree suggested it would be as Glasgow won with a bit to spare.
Glasgow Warriors take to the Hampden pitch for the first leg of the 1872 Cup against Edinburgh. Jamie Dobie breaks clear of the Edinburgh defence to touch down in the second half. Glasgow celebrate in front of their jubilant supporters as they pile on the points at Hampden.
