Heartbreaking maps have revealed the deadliest roads in London as the number of people killed in crashes continues to rise. There were 66 pedestrians killed on the streets of London in 2024, a death every 5.5 days, including a two-year-old toddler who was killed in a heartbreaking collision in Wembley. An eight-year-old girl was also killed after being hit by a lorry in west London while walking to his gurdwara.
Other recent deaths include Aidan Chapman, 25, who was fatally injured when a car was driven into a group of pedestrians on Shaftesbury Avenue, Soho, on Christmas Day. Mr Chapman died in hospital on New Year’s Eve. Anthony Gilheaney, 30, from Harlow in Essex, has been charged with four counts of attempted murder and other offences. The Standard has created an interactive tool to help tell the stories of the pedestrians killed on the streets of London, using data from TfL, the Met Police and reporting at the time of the incidents.
The oldest pedestrian to be killed on the streets of London appears to be an 85-year-old woman who died after being struck by a bus in Hackney, although there were several people in their 80s who were also killed. There was nearly a pedestrian killed on London’s roads every two days in October, which data shows was the deadliest month. Three people were killed in separate crashes on October 1, including Safia Ali who was struck by a tow truck and a car in a collision on Brixton Road.
The map shows pedestrian deaths and does not include some of the most tragic incidents on London’s roads. Last year, a heavily pregnant woman, 38, and her unborn baby were killed in a car crash with an unmarked police car on October 17. Witnesses described how her vehicle “flipped three times”. Provisional data collected by TfL lists a total of 130 road fatalities in Greater London in 2024. This includes 66 pedestrians, 10 cyclists, 18 motorcyclists, 27 car occupants, three bus occupants, five HGV occupants and one e-scooter rider.
