Home Office ‘refuses to believe Kenyan asylum seeker is a lesbian’ A lesbian who left her daughters behind in Kenya amid death threats was refused asylum as the Home Office did not ‘believe’ she was gay.

Given her work as a travel consultant and the ‘breakdown of her marriage’ – with a man who Virginia said was abusive – the decision-maker said she could ‘relocate to other areas within Kenya’.

Kenya's high court, in a much-awaited verdict, refused to scrap laws criminalising homosexuality, fearing this would lead to same-sex marriage which it said was unconstitutional.

‘When my daughter was barely two years old, I couldn’t take it any more and I left,’ Virginia, who founded a travel agency in 2006, said.
