A massively popular and highly rated psychological thriller is making a massive comeback by returning to cinemas in January to mark a major milestone. David Fincher’s Se7en, which starred Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Gwyneth Paltrow, is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025 with a specially remastered version hitting IMAX cinemas in London.
What’s more, for non-capital dwellers, the acclaimed movie is also being released on digital platforms and Blu-Ray disc for the first time in 4K resolution. Se7en, which holds an outstanding 95% rating from over 250,000 audience reactions on Rotten Tomatoes – and a very healthy score of 83% from critics as well – follows two cops, Mills and Somerset (Pitt and Freeman), on the tail of a brilliant and elusive killer.
They come to realise that he is orchestrating a string of horrific murders, with each kill targeting someone guilty of one of the seven deadly sins. Set in a crime-riddled city, Paltrow plays Mills’ wife Tracy, who is pregnant and afraid to raise her child in that environment. She is also befriended by Somerset.
The Oscar-nominated flick is often cited among film fans’ favourites and routinely appears in lists of admired works of cinema. It’s also known for a major plot twist at the end, which we won’t spoil here, but suffice it to say it promises ‘a stunning denouement that will rip the scar tissue off the most hardened soul’ according to official studio materials.
Among its rave reviews, fan James Lough enthused on Google: ‘David Fincher’s Se7en, is a poignant and deeply disturbing classic of the crime thriller genre. The film is rich with talented performances, a smart, memorable script, a haunting score, wickedly grisly set pieces, and one of the most menacing villains ever put to screen.’.
