Strapping the VR device to my head and finding myself sitting on a tropical beach with waves lapping at my feet, it felt like I’d stepped into an episode of Tomorrow’s World (or perhaps Black Mirror). I was about to discover how Channel 4 has launched its streaming app on Apple Vision Pro, meaning you can watch Gogglebox or Bake Off or any of C4’s hundreds of shows, while sitting comfortably within a virtual version of the Taskmaster set.
Some clever bods have spent months blending digital content with the physical world to create an exact replica of the famous red room, throne and all. As I stepped inside, I felt like I’d entered a futuristic world where TV watchers no longer sit staring at a small box or screen in the corner of the room, but are now so immersed in what they are watching in their homes, cinema-style, that they actually feel part of it.
So here’s how it works. The Apple Vision Pro is controlled by your eye movements and once I’d “clicked” on the Taskmaster App - which you do by tapping your thumb and forefinger together in the air in front of you, I was transported to the Taskmaster set with its iconic red room, wallpaper, chandeliers, and throne. It felt like I was actually in there and I could do a full 360degree look at every bit of it.
At the end of the room, there was a a HUGE screen - the size of an entire wall - and you can scroll through to choose and C4 show to watch in pin-sharp resolution. I chose Taskmaster, which seemed logical, and it was great to watch all the hilarious challenges going on while feeling like I was sitting right there alongside Alex and Greg.
