The temperature has well and truly dropped but like many of us wanting to keep our energy bill down, I'm still trying to be cautious about when to put the heating on. Money-saving expert Martin Lewis shouts about heating the human not the home, in a bid to save on bills, advising us to use everything from hot water bottles to wearable hoodies in order to stay snug without the costly need to heat the whole house.

With his words echoing in my mind, I was more than intrigued when I came cross the Silentnight Heat Genie Self Heating Giant Blanket. Sure there are tons of electric blankets on the market that are relatively cheap to use, but after the initial investment of £37.99, Silentnight claim the Heat Genie costs not even a penny to run as 'no electric power is needed'.

Sumptuously 'comfortable and cosy', the blanket works by using a heat reflecting foil layer that reflects your body heat back on you, for an extra layer of warmth without the need for electricity. Available from Amazon, Sleepy People or Argos, I couldn't wait to get my (cold) hands on it to see for myself whether it really lives up to its electricity powered counterparts. Having already sold-out multiple times at various retailers, I had high hopes.

My initial impression of the Heat Genie Blanket is the sheer size of it. It's well and truly super-sized, measuring 180cm x 240cm meaning it's big enough for more than one person, or pet, to snuggle into. It features a plush fabric outer and sherpa fleece inner which is super-soft to the touch and comes in a pleasing grey and white colourway. I would have preferred a choice of colours, however, it's a fairly neutral shade that should fit into most home interiors.
