As the festive season rolls in, Waitrose customers are scratching their heads over being ID'd for a dessert. It's usually a compliment to be asked for ID when you're over 21, but it's less amusing when it slows down your shopping spree. We all know that alcohol, tobacco products, fireworks, certain medications, and sharp objects can trigger an age check at the tills. But now, Waitrose's tiramisu has joined the list, causing quite the stir among shoppers.
Christopher Hope, the political editor and presenter for GB News, sparked the debate with a video he posted online about his own bafflement when asked for ID while buying the Italian sweet from Waitrose on Victoria Street in London. The 53-year-old journalist took to X (formerly Twitter), and said: "Tonight I was age-checked when I tried to buy Waitrose Tiramisu at its shop on Victoria Street, central London. What is going on?".
Hope's footage showed the moment he scanned the £3.79 dessert, only to be greeted by an 'Age confirmation required' warning at the self-service till, complete with a bold exclamation mark and a prompt for assistance. This revelation prompted chatter on social media, with one user revealing: "The same happened to me! It's the alcohol, apparently.".
Others joined the conversation, pointing out the dessert's alcohol content was likely the reason for the age check. One individual said: "It contains alcohol. Everyone who buys it is age checked.". "Guessing tiramisu contains alcohol," said another. A different customer shared a similar experience at another supermarket, saying: "I was once age checked for wine gums in Tesco.".
