Fans of iconic BBC sitcom The Liver Birds have been left distressed to discover that some episodes of the series have been lost for all time. The iconic BBC sitcom ran for an impressive 10 seasons, airing 86 episodes between 1969 and 1996 and starred Pauline Collins as Dawn, Polly James as Beryl Hennessey, Nerys Hughes as Sandra Hutchinson and Elizabeth Estensen as Carol Boswell. It quickly became a nationwide sensation, capturing the hearts of viewers across the UK with its relatable jokes and sharp social commentary.
While the series was on the air for an impressive 27 years, it was ultimately cancelled in 1996 after a revival failed to recreate the spark of the initial 1969 to 1978 run. Now fans have discovered that key episodes from the first ever season of the show appear to have been lost forever.
Fans have taken to Reddit to share memories of the show - written and created by late screenwriters Carla Lane and Myra Taylor - and share a theory that some classic episodes have been lost for all time and are unavailable even on DVD. One poster asked: “Remember The Liver Birds? Apparently Series 1 was wiped and lost forever. Is this true?”.
Another appeared to confirm the theory, writing: "Yes, before the digital age, many episodes were taped over to save costs. Classics like Dad's Army, Doctor Who and others have missing episodes." Another wrote: "TV Brain tells me there are four episodes missing. I suspect the rest made it to DVD.".
