Christmas is a time for celebration, but it’s also when messes can strike - and it can be hard to keep on top of them during the clean up. Wine spills, gravy drips, glitter explosions, and candle wax splatters are common holiday mishaps. Cleaning expert Sarah Dempsey has shared her top tips for tackling even the toughest stains.
Sarah stresses the importance of acting quickly. “No matter the stain, the key to success when treating it is acting fast – a quicker clean-up prevents the spread and set-in of the stain,” she says. “Some stains, if not treated, can chemically react with fabrics or surfaces and cause irreversible discolouration or damage.”.
Here are Sarah’s best tips for keeping your home spotless this festive season according to the Daily Mail. Oil stains. Oil stains from cooking are a common issue during the holidays. “Dab the stain with washing detergent or fairy liquid and throw it in the machine on the hottest recommended setting for your clothing's fabric type,” Sarah explains. For carpets, sprinkle baking soda over the stain, leave it for five minutes, then vacuum. Scrub with dish soap and rinse with water to finish.
Candle wax splashes. Candle wax can be tricky to remove. Sarah recommends scraping off excess wax, then using a hairdryer to melt it onto a paper towel. “For polyester or denim, use an ice cube to harden the wax, then scrape off and freeze the garment before applying heat or using an iron to remove any leftover residue,” she says. For carpets, gently scrape off wax, apply low heat with an iron, and treat the stain with rubbing alcohol.
