You don't need to travel far to find a slice of tranquil paradise. We've all marvelled at the idea of jetting off to one of the bucket-list destinations you see in the window of travel agents: a sea-view cabin in the Maldives, a luxury cruise around the Caribbean, or a week drinking cocktails on a pristine beach in Fiji. But in spite of its grey and rainy reputation, the UK is home to a slew of hotspots that offer equally stunning views and natural beauty.

St David, Britain's smallest city which has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, is no exception. Dripping with history and an array of wildlife - this seaside municipality needs to be your next staycation. Located in Pembrokeshire, St David is named after the patron saint of Wales. With a population of just over 1,600, it was designated as a conservation area by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park back in 1972. St Davids Cathedral is one of the most visited attractions in the city, and looks like something straight out of a film. "Nowhere in Britain is there a more ancient cathedral settlement, for it reaches back fourteen centuries and survived the plunder of the Norsmen in the 'Dark Ages'," said Visit Wales. "St David chose this wild, beautiful region as the site of his monastery in the 6th century and you will find his shrine in the purple-stoned cathedral, which nestles inconspicuously in a grassy hollow beneath the rooftops of the tiny city.".

For those wanting a more leisurely trip, Whitesands Bay is a Blue Flag beach that stretches over a mile long. It is often touted as the best beach in the country, and attracts surfers and sunbathers alike. "At very low tide the remains of an ancient forest can be seen, consisting of stumps of birch, fir, hazel and oak trees," said Pembrokeshire Coast. "Parking is adjacent to the beach and lifeguards are on duty during the summer months.".
