Call the Midwife star Linda Bassett is back for season 14 as Phyllis Crane but what is there to know about the actress away from Nonnatus House?. The heartwarming period drama is returning to the small screen on Sunday, January 5, at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer with all the usual suspects expected to feature in the new episodes.

Among those is nurse Phyllis Crane (played by Linda Bassett) who may appear tough as nails but as fans know all too well, has a heart of gold underneath that tough exterior. With the show ready to debut its 14th outing, here’s all there is to know about the star behind Call the Midwife’s Phyllis Crane.

Bassett, now 74, was born in Pluckley, Kent, in 1950, to a typist mother and a police officer father. She worked as an usher at the Old Vic Theatre while she was at school before she went on to study English at the University of Leeds. However, Bassett dropped out of university after a year and became involved in a local drama group which put on plays at community centres and schools.

She went on to make her stage debut at the age of 32 before appearing on TV in various hit shows like Heartbeat, Midsomer Murders, East is East and Lark Rise to Candleford. The Call the Midwife actress has also dabbled in the world of film, starring in the iconic comedy-drama Calendar Girls along with Hollywood legends like Celia Imrie, Julie Walters and Helen Mirren.
