After 21 years of being 'happily unmarried', Kirstie Allsopp and her limelight-shunning boyfriend have finally tied the knot. Last week, the couple - who share Bay, 18, and Oscar, 16 - married in a romantic ceremony at the Grosvenor Chapel in Mayfair, which was the setting for Love Actually's wedding scene back in 2003.
However, the setting also has an emotional connections for the bride and was where a memorial service for her beloved father, former Christie's chairman Charles Allsopp, 6th Baron Hindlip, was held last June. It was also where Kirstie's parents and grandparents held their wedding celebrations.
In a bid to keep their nuptials under wraps, the newlyweds reportedly kept the wedding secret from their 70 guests until the very last minute and told them they were celebrating Ben's 64th birthday. And while it may well have raised eyebrows among loved ones, this unique approach to wedding planning is very much in character for the fiercely-private couple - whose love story has been anything but conventional.
The couple were introduced by Ben's ex-wife Theresa, who attended the same exclusive school as Kirstie, in early 2004 at a party for prospective Tory MP Orlando Fraser. Shortly after they met, the self-made property tycoon told Kirstie, now 53, that he never wanted to marry again - but confessed that he wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
