Jack Draper has withdrawn from Great Britain's squad for the United Cup as a hip issue continues to trouble his build-up to the Australian Open. While Draper insists he is 'very positive about competing in the Australian Open this year', this preparation is far from ideal. The 22-year-old was due this week to be training with Carlos Alcaraz in Alicante, as revealed by Mail Sport, but his hip problem forced him to cancel and now he will miss the United Cup mixed team event too. The British No1 has also scratched his nomination for the Davis Cup tie in Japan which follows the first Grand Slam of the season.

'As I work to get on top of my hip injury and get match fit, I have unfortunately been advised not to play in the United Cup,' said the British No1. 'While we are very positive about competing in the Aus Open this year, I know I won’t be able to jump straight into a packed schedule as I manage and strengthen my hip… gutted as I was really looking forward to play in the United Cup for the first time.

'Together with (Davis Cup captain) Leon (Smith), we have also made the difficult decision for me to sit out of the upcoming Davis Cup match in Japan in order to give me the opportunity post Aus Open to complete the rehab and strengthening of my hip.'. Mention of hip issues is enough to send a shiver down the spines of British tennis fans who have watched Andy Murray travails over the years. Draper himself is surely thinking of his predecessor as he tries his best to nip and problems in the bud.
