Jamie Carragher has launched a savage attack on Tottenham after they gave up a one-goal advantage to crash out of the Carabao Cup to Liverpool. After arriving at Anfield with a narrow advantage, Spurs capitulated and fell to a 4-0 defeat on the night while barely laying a glove on Arne Slot's side. The Lilywhites could not manage a shot on target as Cody Gakpo, Mo Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk all got on the scoresheet.
Former Red Carragher questioned Spurs' belief heading into the game and suggested it was a longstanding problem for the side. The pundit was left far from surprised with what the north London side presented against Liverpool. "It was never in doubt before the game," he said. "It's Tottenham!. "When do Tottenham ever win a big game? When do Tottenham ever go and surprise, win against the odds?. "The odds were massively in favour against Liverpool, they're at Anfield, they're the best team in the country, possibly the best team in Europe right now. But it's not just this Spurs team. They never shock you, never do something out of the ordinary.
"I'm trying to remember the last big game they won: it was probably that semi-final against Ajax in the Champions League. I was in the stadium that night and I don't want to take it away from Tottenham, but they were very lucky! They were battered for most of the game, it was a freak and they got two goals in the last minute. "Whenever they go into a big game as a club, nobody ever believes they're going to win. That's not me as a Liverpool fan, those Tottenham fans there tonight - not one of them believed they were going to win and to go Wembley! They just won't.".
Jamie Redknapp was not quite as scathing but was left in disbelief that the side did not pose more threat. The ex-Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder question the experienced figures in the team and said: "We expected a bit more from Tottenham tonight. "I cannot get my head round them not having one shot on target in a semi-final. I know there was the one half chance when Son manufactured something but even then you felt the game had gone.
"They were trying to play out from the back. The goalkeeper was edgy. In midfield they never showed any courage to get on the ball and make things happen. They were so abject. It's not the inexperienced players, it was the experienced ones I was looking at.". Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
