Arne Slot may learn from his predecessor Jurgen Klopp that January transfers aren't always the smartest amid calls from Jamie Carragher to bolster Liverpool's defence. The Reds sit pretty on top of the Premier League, although their lead has been cut to four points following their midweek draw at Nottingham Forest and Arsenal's win over Tottenham. Slot has barely acted in the transfer market, instead working largely with the squad he inherited.

Virgil van Dijk has continued to be a towering presence but he's had to deal with new partners as Liverpool cope with injury woes. Ibrahima Konate had been out but has returned, with Joe Gomez now sidelined through injury, while Jarell Quansah is yet to win over his manager.

Carragher believes Liverpool's solid defensive base is disappearing - they've only kept one clean sheet in their past seven league games - and wants reinforcements bought in. Klopp previously acted in January when he had personnel issues, but his recruits failed to make the grade and never lasted the course.

Carragher said on Tuesday night: "Liverpool should’ve won tonight, but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win, but the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season has gone. Always look likely to concede. Buy a defender!!!!".

Back in 2021, Klopp chose to dip into the market when a host of his defenders were sidelined. Whilst the Reds have struck some stunning deals in the New Year, most notably Van Dijk back in 2018, the majority of managers admits mid-season deals are hard to make a success of with teams often inflating prices.
