Foodies in North Korea are no longer allowed to eat hot dogs because they are considered too Western, it has been revealed. Leader Kim Jong-un has banned everyone in the country from eating the popular staple. According to the ban, eating the sausage item now counts as treason. Locals who usually sell them on the street have been told to stop or face being deported to labour camps.
North Koreans are said to love a spicy noodle soup which uses hot dogs or spam. The dish, called Budae-jjigae, was imported from South Korea in 2017. Budae-jjigae, also known as 'Army Base Stew, is also made up of umami-rich broth, Korean hot pepper paste, beans, flakes and kimchi. But now vendors have been blocked from offering the soup at markets.
According to Radio Free Asia (RFA), officials banned the dish alongside steamed rice cakes tteokbokki. One vendor, who is based in the northern province of Ryanggang, stressed that authorities have been monitoring them closely. The vendor told The Sun: “Sales of budae-jjigae in the market have stopped. The police and market management have said anyone caught selling it will be shut down.”.
The dictator has also warned couples who plan to get divorced will be sent to a labour camp, because he considers the act a "crime". It has been reported that Kim Jong-un wants each person to be sentenced to up to six months in prison. He views divorce as a sign of being "anti-socialist".
Unfortunately, the two major rules are not the only changes that North Koreans have to adhere to. In December, the tyrant stressed that anyone who chooses to celebrate Christmas could be executed. Timothy Cho, who works with charity Open Doors UK & Ireland, explained that Christians are considered "political prisoners".
