The Kardashians are back and better than ever for the sixth season of their reality show on Disney+, which premiered on the streaming platform today (Thursday, 6th February). The first episode has already set the tone for the rest of the series, with plenty of twists and turns that fans will not have seen coming. In one scene, matriarch Kris Jenner revealed a surprising link to the Menendez brothers that nobody would have expected.
Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of killing their parents Jose and Mary Louise 'Kitty' Menendez at their Beverly Hills home in 1989. Netflix released a documentary regarding the case in October last year and it became a huge hit after fans were on the edge of their seats while watching the one-off on the streaming platform. The first episode of The Kardashians was filmed in April last year, prior to the documentary releasing on Netflix.
After a photoshoot with Kris and sisters Kourtney and Kendall, Kim revealed: "Ryan Murphy told me that his new series, like how he did Dahmer, is now gonna be on the Menendez brothers.". Kris shockingly responded: "Oh, my God. You know I knew those guys in the ‘80s. I knew the kids because Erik used to come over and play tennis with your dad on the weekends.". Kim added: "I remember my dad talking about the case and I remember the whole case growing up in Beverly Hills, that’s where we were.
"The trial, I think, happened when I was, like, 13 so there were big cases that I would love to talk to my dad about. And so this was one of them. "Now, being older and seeing it from a different lens, 35 years later, and knowing what I know now about the system, I just have a whole different outlook on it.". Lyle and Erik were charged with the 1989 murder of their parents, but they both claimed they shot their parents out of self-defence after years of emotional and sexual abuse from their father.
However, their allegations were deemed inadmissible in their second trial and they were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Kim visited the pair in prison after the documentary released and argued that Lyle and Erik should be given second chances and their life sentences should be reconsidered. In a personal note she shared with NBC in October 2024, the mum-of-four penned: "I don’t believe that spending their entire natural lives incarcerated was the right punishment for this complex case.
