Kyren Wilson opens up on strains of being world champion on life outside snooker

Kyren Wilson says his family have struggled with the demands put on him as world champion, but he is determined to make it all worthwhile and enjoy his year as a first time Crucible king. The Warrior wrote his name into snooker history in May when he won the World Championship, beating Jak Jones in the Sheffield final.
He has had an impressive time on the table since then, not wilting under the pressure of being world champ, but winning the Xi’an Grand Prix and Northern Ireland Open so far this season. It has not all been easy for Wilson and his family, though, with a packed calendar seeing him compete around the world and more commitments arising as world champion.
‘I feel like I’ve spent more time in hotel rooms and out of a suitcase than ever before but I just mentally accepted that was going to be the case this year and not let it consume me,’ Wilson told Metro. ‘I wanted to make sure I enjoyed it because you are only going to be first time world champion once. If you let it consume you then what’s the point? What’s the point of working so hard to achieve that?’.
The 33-year-old does have to keep reminding himself of that, though, as it is not always easy for his wife and two young sons. ‘My wife has barely seen me this season and my kids have struggled with me being away,’ he said. ‘They’re so young and they will get to a certain age when they do realise it’s all worthwhile and I’ve achieved something very special. That’s a result of doing all this.
