Labour MP in 'pensioner dying joke' WhatsApp group set for crisis meeting with party's Chief Whip A second Labour MP who apologised for comments made in a WhatsApp group will meet with the party’s Chief Whip on Monday after an investigation was launched.
Home Office Minister Angela Eagle said the party's Chief Whip would be speaking to Mr Ryan and that Mr Gwynne's swift suspension showed that the Prime Minister would "uphold the highest standards".
“He's apologised for it this morning and my understanding is that the Chief Whip will be seeing him so you can't expect me to have an opinion ahead of those meetings in terms of what will happen but I think the Prime Minister has demonstrated that he expects the highest standards of behaviour in his ministers and MPs and if people fall below that then that's a disciplinary matter for the party and the Chief Whip.".
Fellow MP Mr Gwynne was sacked as health minister on Saturday after the Mail on Sunday reported a string of offensive and abusive messages in the Labour group, which included one where he "joked" he hoped a pensioner constituent who had complained about bin collections died before the next election.
Burnley MP Oliver Ryan will be asked to explain discuss comments he made in a messaging group with sacked minister Andrew Gwynne.
