Manchester United put in spirited performance as they drew 2-2 with arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield, kicking off their New Year with a well-earned Premier League point. Despite heavy snowfall overnight, officials confirmed that the big game would go ahead, though some United fans would have been hoping for a postponement given the team’s shocking form.

But from kick-off, Ruben Amorim’s side looked much, much improved, with great defensive discipline stifling Liverpool’s rampant attack in the first-half. Lisandro Martinez opened the scoring soon after the break with a thunderous effort from close-range that went in via the underside of the crossbar.

Their celebrations were short-lived however, as Cody Gakpo scored an equally awesome equaliser and soon the momentum was all with Arne Slot’s men. Mohammed Salah was given the chance to give the Reds to lead when Matthijs de Ligt’s handball resulted in a penalty after a VAR check. The Egyptian King made no mistake from the spot and continued his fantastic record against the Red Devils.

The three points seemed destined to go to the home side only for Amad Diallo to score a well-worked equaliser with just 10 minutes to go. There were chances to win it for both sides late on, with Harry Maguire skying an effort from just a few yards out in the final seconds of injury-time.
