Liverpool vs Man Utd clash under threat as urgent safety meeting held over severe snow

Liverpool City Council’s Safety Advisory Group will hold a meeting to determine whether Sunday afternoon’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester United can go ahead. Heavy snow has fallen in the Liverpool area throughout Saturday night into Sunday morning, with amber weather warnings for snow and freezing rain in place for both Liverpool and Manchester.
Amber warnings are more serious than yellow warnings but not as serious as red. They indicate a possible risk to life as well as significant travel disruption. The dangers posed to supporters travelling to Anfield for the 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday, particularly United fans coming from the Manchester area on treacherous icy roads, will be the key concern for the Safety Advisory Group, who meet regularly in the face of such issues posed by the weather.
Last month the group were left with no alternative but to postpone the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park after Storm Darragh battered the UK with winds of up to 90mph. That postponement has left Liverpool with a game in hand in the Premier League title race, with the Reds now five points clear of second placed Arsenal having played two games fewer following the Gunners’ 1-1 draw at Brighton on Saturday evening.
Should Sunday’s meeting with United be postponed then it would hand Liverpool a further fixture headache, with the short trip to Everton yet to be formally rearranged but pencilled in for next month. While the Reds go into the game top of the table, United enter the clash with their rivals down in 14th place.
