With its city centre location, fast security queues and stunning take-off and landing views, London City Airport is beloved by travellers. Which? recently crowning it ‘by far the best airport in London’ and second in the UK for 2025. But the major downside with London City is that you’re not exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to flights.

Just 90 planes depart per day, which is a fraction compared to London Heathrow, which sees an average of 650 take off. And currently, the airport only operates flights with 10 airlines which mostly cater to short-haul and business travellers: British Airways, ITA Airways, KLM, Loganair, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair, SWISS, Aurigny and Air Dolmiti.

It means that budget travellers looking for cheap flights often have to opt for busier, less convenient airports. But that could all be about to change, as London City has applied to the Civil Aviation Authority to make it possible for a different type of aircraft model, the A320neo, to depart and land on its runways.

Crucially, the A320neo is a model used by budget airlines, including Jet2, Wizz Air and Easyjet, who currently don’t fly from London City, but this new change could make that possible. A spokesperson for the airport said that, if granted, the new model would would ‘open up a range of possible new routes for passengers.’.

The spokesperson continued: ‘The airport sees the possible introduction of the A320neo as key to building its leisure offering. ‘The aircraft is able to carry over 180 passengers depending on the preferred seat configuration and can travel over 1,000km, which covers large parts of mainland Europe.’.
