A man allegedly shot dead his friend who claimed he could ‘dodge a bullet’. Ashton Jonathan Mann, 23, was smoking marijuana with the friend in the kitchen and talking about guns, then they continued the conversation in a garage, according to a probable cause affidavit. Mann and his friend were handling two guns when the latter ‘said he can dodge a bullet’, stated the affidavit obtained by ABC4.

They unloaded both weapons and Mann said he pointed a gun and fired it as his friend tried to ‘jump out of the way to prove he could move before the trigger was pulled’. Mann said they did it around six times and ‘the final time the gun fired striking (his friend) in the chest’, according to the documents. The suspect said he immediately called 911 and tended to his friend until first responders got to the home in Kearns in Salt Lake County, Utah.

Authorities found the friend unresponsive and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials with Unified Police obtained a search warrant for the home and discovered two handguns, magazines, ammunition and ‘drug paraphernalia consistent with marijuana use’, the documents stated. Mann was arrested shortly after 4am on Sunday and charged with a count of second-degree felony manslaughter and a firearms-related third-degree count.

The victim’s identity was not immediately revealed. It happened nearly three years after an Oregon man accidentally shot his brother dead while trying to protect himself from a black bear that appeared in their backyard. The man then turned the gun on himself. And in October 2020, a 23-year-old Florida man allegedly accidentally shot his twin brother dead as they sat in a car playing around with guns. A pipe with weed residue was discovered inside the vehicle, though it was not clear if the brothers were using drugs at the time.
