Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Manchester United will extend Harry Maguire's contract just 18 months after the club stripped him of the captaincy. Maguire's deal is set to expire at the end of the season, following six years on the red side of Manchester.

The centre-back has become a regular starter under Amorim having struggled for minutes under former boss Erik ten Hag. The 31-year-old has been at the back in all of United's recent record-breaking three consecutive Premier League defeats. Despite his side's dismal run of form, after losing a record five league matche sin December, United's Portuguese coach has insisted Maguire is the 'leader' that United need.

'Harry Maguire: [we are] going to trigger our option,' began Amorim. 'I spoke with him this morning and I told him that he has to improve his game on the pitch. 'We need him a lot, he has to improve as a leader, we all know the sit he had here but we need him a lot so we are going to trigger happily the option for Harry.'.
