Ex-Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is set to STAY at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim has confirmed. The centre-back, who joined United for £80m from Leicester in 2019, has just six months remaining on his current deal. He is free to open talks with foreign clubs, and would be leaving for nothing in the summer without extended terms.

United retained an option to extend Maguire's deal for a further year. And boss Ruben Amorim has confirmed that option has been taken up, while Amad is also closing in on a new deal. Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend's game with Liverpool, Amorim said: “Amad is near, Harry Maguire we are going to trigger our option.

“I spoke with him [Harry] this morning and I told him he has to improve on the pitch, we need him a lot. Also, he has to improve as a leader. We all know the situation that he had here but we need him a lot in this moment, so we are going to trigger, happily, the option for him.”.

Asked if Maguire can still be a key player, Amorim added: “When you look at our team we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game, so we are happy to continue.”. Maguire, 31, has made over 200 appearances for the Red Devils since arriving from Leicester, including starting in each of the last four league games. He was appointed club captain in 2020 but had the armband stripped from him by Erik ten Hag.
