Aston Villa are putting the finishing touches on a sensational deal to sign England striker Marcus Rashford. The out-of-favour Manchester United star is all set to join Unai Emery's Villa on loan until the end of the season. Rashford, who had been pursuing a dream move to Barcelona, emerged as a late replacement for the Villans following the exit of Jhon Duran, who left this week for Saudi Pro side Al-Nassr in a deal valued at £77.5m.

Officials from the Birmingham club are trying to thrash out the finer details with the January transfer window closing on Monday Rashford’s £315,000-a-week wages were proving a major stumbling block to any move – temporary or permanent. But it seems that Villa have cut a deal with United at least until the end of the current campaign. Villa’s top earner is goalkeeper Emi Martinez who pulls in around £150,000-a-week. It is highly unlikely that they will be smashing their pay ceiling by over double to land the 27-year-old forward. That means United will be paying him to play for another club for the remainder of the season.

Villa need a replacement for striker Jhon Duran, who left this week for Saudi Pro side Al-Nassr in a deal valued at £77.5m. Emery needs plausible back-up both out wide – where Rashford normally operates – and through the middle, should No.1 striker Ollie Watkins pick up an injury. Rashford's representatives had previously held discussions with Tottenham, West Ham and Barcelona over a possible switch, but clubs baulked at his salary, leaving United needing to offer something themselves to get a deal over the line.

Villa are reported to have included a clause enabling them to buy Rashford at a later date and are hoping that he can fire them higher up the Premier League table and give them a potential game-changer in the latter stages of the Champions League.
