Tens of thousands of new passengers could soon travel on the London Overground if extension plans go ahead. Known as the West London Orbital, the proposed Overground extension would connect boroughs in the west and northwest of the capital. It would run through Camden, Barnet, Brent, Ealing and Hounslow using existing railways and connect tens of thousands of homes and jobs in the surrounding areas.
The line would cost between £430,000,000 and £610,000,000, according to 2021 TfL estimates. Passengers travelling between west and northwest London would no longer have to make a hook to central London. The new line would connect Hendon, Brent Cross and West Hampstead in the northwest with Hounslow in the west, and through the upcoming Old Oak Common HS2 station, Harlsden and Acton.
The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has said that the West London Orbital is one of his priorities. He said in December that the ‘current stage of development is now nearing completion.’. Funding is needed from local sources, the government, TfL and Greater London Authority to ‘deliver the scheme,’ he said.
Brent Cross has been named as a potential location for a new Overground station. However, many commuters had not heard of it. Ali, from Brent Cross who works in catering at Camden Market, said the proposal ‘sounds brilliant.’. He said having more connected lines ‘would be good’ and although he doesn’t need to travel west ‘too often,’ he would use it if the line existed.
