Marcus Rashford was sat glum-faced beneath the ‘Sir Alex 26 years’ banner in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand. Rashford can’t match Fergie’s tally, but he has clocked up 20 years at United since joining as a seven-year-old. Fergie, who was sat in the directors box opposite, would have noted his development through the ranks and must have felt United had a real prospect on their hands when he retired in 2013.

But 12 years on and it’s all ending in tears with Rashford determined to leave, having been frozen out by Ruben Amorim. He hasn’t played since lasting 56 minutes on December 12 at Viktoria Plzen, that giant of European football, and Amorim hooked him to bring on Rasmus Hojlund, who scored both goals as United came back to win 2-1.

Amorim wasn’t happy with Rashford and axed him completely for the Manchester derby, consigning the former England striker to the Old Trafford wilderness. Amorim underlined that point last night and he left three spaces on his substitutes’ bench empty when Rashford could have filled one.

Rashford, who has seven goals this season, wasn’t even sat with his non-playing team-mates and instead he was all on his own. His representatives are busy trying to find a loan move and although his preferred choice Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund are keen, neither wants to pay his reported £325,000-a-week wages.

This means United will have to cover the deficit, something they are reluctant to do. While a parting of the ways looks inevitable this month, it’s still hugely sad that it has come to this for someone, who was one of English football’s brightest talents and who should be at the peak of his powers at 27.
