Martin Lewis' MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) website has revealed the top ten firms its readers have had the most success haggling with. Haggling is where you try and negotiate a better deal - it can be a great money-saving tool if you have an insurance policy up for renewal, or if you're out of contract with your broadband and mobile provider. New research from MSE shows the companies which have the highest success rate for haggling, with Virgin Media coming out top with an 84% reader success rate.
AA and RAC came out in joint second, third and fourth place, each with an 83% success rate for breakdown and car and home insurance haggling. You can find the full list of top ten firms below. Writing in the latest MSE newsletter, Martin Lewis said: "When you're at or past the end of your contract, you're holstering a huge weapon... loyalty - make 'em pay for it.".
MSE says the best time to haggling is when you're approaching the end of your contract, or when you get your renewal price through for an insurance policy. You should start by comparing the best deals elsewhere using a comparison website. Remember to look for like-for-like deals - so for example, ones that have the same level of texts, calls and data, or broadband speed.
If you don't need as big of an allowance as your current provider gives you, see how much money you could save elsewhere by looking for packages that offer slightly less elsewhere. Once you've got a list of the best deals elsewhere, ask your current provider to see if it can match it.
