Mathys Tel's Spurs U-turn, Ange Postecoglou intervention and transfer clause

Mathys Tel completed a sensational U-turn and sealed his move to Tottenham Hotspur on loan. Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou helped convince French starlet Tel to choose Tottenham ahead of Arsenal and Manchester United. It meant Tel and his representatives hired a private jet on Monday afternoon to fly into London to complete a medical ahead of a beat-the-deadline loan move. The dramatic twist came after the 19-year-old actually snubbed a permanent move to Tottenham last week - but ended up choosing them ahead of their Premier League rivals.
He has joined on loan until the end of the season with a £45million option to turn it permanent in the summer - when he would sign a six-year deal - and will take the No.11 shirt. He could even feature against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg this week if international clearance arrives in time. Tottenham had a £50m bid for Tel accepted by Bayern last week only for the France under-21 international to turn down the move. Bayern did not want to do a loan move even though Arsenal and United were keen - but did a U-turn on deadline day and accepted Tottenham’s proposal.
Tottenham changed the goalposts to a straight loan offer with the hope they can convince him to join with the promise of more regular game time than he has been getting at Bayern. Then, as Tel became increasingly happy with what he saw and further discussions with Postecoglou, a £45million transfer option was fixed into the terms of the deal. Tel has made 83 appearances for Bayern since joining from French club Rennes in 2022, scoring 16 goals and providing seven assists. The France prospect is regarded as one of Europe’s most sought after young players and Tottenham’s last minute move to get the deal done shows they are determined to back Postecoglou.
That was a major coup for Tottenham who did see a late move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi fail. Tottenham made an enquiry for Guehi over the weekend but were told he was not for sale in this window even though he only has 18 months left on his contract. That paved the way for Tottenham to nick Lens defender Kevin Danso from under the noses of Wolves on Sunday in a £20.8m deal. Tottenham have already signed Czech keeper Antonin Kinsky and South Korea winger Yang Min-hyeok, who has been loaned to QPR in this window.
Tottenham could go back for Guehi in the summer but will face serious competition from Chelsea who want to sign their former academy graduate. Newcastle had a bid of £65m turned down last summer, Spurs are unlikely to have got near that in this window because his contract is running down and he will only have a year left by the end of the season.
