Michael van Gerwen has hinted that Chris Dobey may well struggle under pressure when the pair meet in the World Darts Championship semi-finals on Thursday night. MVG booked his spot in the semis with a brilliant 5-3 win over Callan Rydz which saw the Dutchman average over 103 and continue his run of improving his average in each round at Alexandra Palace.
It will be the ninth time Mighty Mike has lined up for a World Championship semi-final, having won six of his previous outings in the final four. In contrast, Dobey will be competing in the semis for the first time after losing in the quarter-finals in each of the last two editions of the World Championship.
Hollywood got over that last eight hump with a 5-3 win over Gerwyn Price on Wednesday, admitting that nerves struck as the winning line approached. He said on stage after downing the Iceman: ‘I’ve never been so nervous throwing at a winning double as today.’.
The 34-year-old added in a post-match press conference: ‘It means a lot. It’s a massive achievement in my career, Just getting over that winning line is hard work. ‘It’s the most nervous I’ve felt throwing to try and win a match, I’m not going to lie.’.
Dobey’s comments were put to Van Gerwen and the three-time world champion feels that it shows a chink in his opponent’s armour which he hopes to exploit. ‘The only thing that you have to do is keep playing well,’ said MVG. ‘Dobey is a fantastic player but when you put him under pressure he can miss. As long as you keep putting the pressure on him I can do some damage.’.
