A cabinet minister has refuted Sir Sadiq Khan’s warning that Donald Trump’s imminent inauguration will bring about “resurgent fascism”. Darren Jones, chief secretary to the treasury, has instead said Britain "has prepared for all scenarios" regarding a trade deal with the US - as he spoke to the media on Sunday.
Mr Trump is hours away from being sworn in as the 47th president of the US and the Labour government has been rolling out a charm offensive to maintain the so-called special relationship with its ally. “These are deeply worrying times, especially if you’re a member of a minority community,” Sir Sadiq wrote.
He also tweeted: “The far-right are sowing fear and division across the globe. “Progressives must act by tackling online hate, challenging extremist rhetoric, and proving democracy can deliver for all.”. Mr Jones was doing the rounds on Sunday’s morning talk shows when he was asked by the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg if he had heard the mayor’s comments.
Yes, and I don’t agree with that,” he said. “President-elect Trump won a enormous election victory in the United States as a democracy. We support democracy and the American people elected Donald Trump and the Republican Party.”. Pushed further on the issue, Mr Jones suggested Sir Sadiq “is allowed” to make that case, “but I don’t agree with it”.
