We are just days away from Donald Trump reclaiming his seat in the White House. The inauguration of Mr Trump as the 47th President of the United States will take place on Monday, 20 January, on the West Front of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
World leaders will watch with keen interest as he assumes power again, contemplating what his presidency will mean for their nations. Upon Mr Trump’s election victory late last year, Sir Keir Starmer stated that the UK-US special relationship would “continue to prosper.” However, the prime minister and other senior Labour figures have not always been as complimentary in their remarks about him.
Here’s a look at what some prominent Labour politicians have said previously. In 2023, Sir Keir compared the Conservative Party to Mr Trump, accusing the Tories of straying far from the values championed by Winston Churchill. “Is there anybody in the Government now who feels a sense of obligation to anything other than their own self-interest? To democracy, the rule of law, serving our country?” he asked during a speech in Buckinghamshire.
He criticised what he described as an "entitlement to power totally unchecked by any sense of service or responsibility," calling it "the cultural stain that runs through the modern Conservative Party”. Sir Keir added: “These aren’t Churchill’s Tories any more. If anything, they behave more and more like Donald Trump. They look at the politics of America and want to bring that here.
