Gavin and Stacey fans were heartbroken as the beloved sitcom came to an end on Christmas Day. Christmas Day saw the long-running BBC sitcom reach a conclusion - ending 14 years of laughs and tears. The final ever episode revealed that James Cordon's character, Smithy, failed to accept Nessa's proposal from the 2019 Christmas special and he was instead set to marry his girlfriend Sonia, played by Laura Aikman.
The episode included a stressed-out Nessa smoking a cigarette and vaping at the same time. Thankfully, things turned out alright for Smithy and Nessa, much to the delight of fans. With the final chapter of the show done, it's no surprise there have been rumours of a possibility of a spin-off focusing on Neil the Baby - who is the son of Smithy and Nessa.
Neil was played by Oscar Hartland, who last appeared in the 2019 special. A spin-off could focus on Neil's life now that he's older and attending school. Joanna Page, who plays Stacey in the show, teased the possibility of a new programme but has one condition if it were to be made.
She told The Sun: "A spin-off series would be fun, I think the curiosity would be very high. But only if it was to be written by Ruth and James." Ruth Jones and James Corden recently announced a 2025 project following the Gavin and Stacey finale. Ruth and James revealed they're writing a new book together, titled When Gavin Met Stacey and Everything in Between: A Story Of Love And Friendship.
The pair's literary offering will hit bookshops in Autumn 2025 and will detail their journey to creating a comedy that touched the hearts of a nations. Speaking in the wake of the book deal being announced, Ruth, 48, and James, 46, told fans: "We're so excited to be sharing the story behind the story of Gavin and Stacey. The show has played a huge part in our twenty-five-year friendship and we hope this book will give readers a fresh insight into how it all came about.".
