It feels like it has been years since a Nordic noir has rattled our bones like The Bridge or The Killing – but Netflix is about to fill that void. In just two days, the streamer will drop all episodes of Swedish thriller The Åre Murders which features all the ingredients of an instant classic: a troubled female detective, an idyllic but eerie small town and the disappearance of a young woman.
If that sounds familiar that will be because the Netflix Original has been adapted from the best-selling book series of the same from author Viveca Sten, which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The Åre Murders follows police officer Hanna Ahlande (Carla Sehn) who is seeking refuge at her sister’s holiday home in mountain resort village Åre after being suspended from her job and dumped by her partner.
However, when a young woman goes missing on the icy night of Lucia, an annual Swedish celebration, Hanna can’t help but start investigating the case. With an understaffed station and limited resources, local police officer Daniel Lindskog (Kardo Razzazi) reluctantly has to accept Hanna’s help, but it’s unclear if the pair can trust each other. After the trailer for The Åre Murders was released, fans on YouTube said they were counting down the days until it dropped on Netflix.
@carolconner9216 said: ‘Nothing like the suspense of a blood trail in a snowy blizzard. This looks promising!’. Echoing their sentiment, @pauli2169 commented: ‘Scandinavians are masters at this type of series. I am looking forward to it.’. @kathleenjones1399 added: ‘Looking forward to watching this. Scandinavian shows are always so great!’. The Åre Murders is not the only thriller enticing fans on Netflix after season 2 of The Recruit dropped last month.
The Recruit premiered in 2022 and followed To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before star Noah Centineo as lawyer Owen Hendricks, whose life is instantly flipped upside down when he starts working for the CIA. Far away from Peter Kavinsky, Noah’s Owen finds himself plunged into complex international conflicts almost immediately, leading him into dangerous situations that are beyond his control. Season 2 picks up directly after the events of the season one finale cliffhanger, with the synopsis teasing more trouble in store for Owen and co.
It reads: ‘Season two of The Recruit finds CIA lawyer, Owen Hendricks pulled into a life-threatening espionage situation in South Korea, only to realize that the bigger threat just might be coming from inside the Agency. After bingeing The Recruit, Reddit user OddOne402 praised: ‘This season 2 was craaazy!! Watched it literally the minute it aired in one go. The plot moves really, really fast, everything changes in minutes.
‘I really hope the way it ended we will get the 3rd season and that it will not take them 3 years to make it. Overral, it is for sure better (for me, at least) than the 2nd season of Night Agent [sic].’. MyNameIsGreyarch also wrote: ‘I am only three episodes in, and this season is already one of the best things that Netflix has ever made. The pure chaos. The brilliant writing. The great humor, and the phenomenal action. It’s just [mwah] chef’s kiss.’.
What I Own: I quit London at 48 and bought my first home in Sussex for £325,000. I bought a house with my partner — but when we broke up, he refused to sell. I build 20ft tiny homes for homeless people (and they only cost £12,000). London's cheapest place to rent revealed — but it might not be for long. Londoners are flocking to this ‘bustling’ neighbourhood 10 miles from the centre. The Åre Murders will launch globally on Netflix on Thursday.
