A major new TV star leads a brand new thriller which premiered on Apple TV+ today (Wednesday, January 22) and viewers have been left divided. While the eight-part miniseries has an intriguing premise and stellar cast, these elements don’t quite add up for some critics and viewers.
However, others have insisted the series is gripping, if slightly far-fetched, with a magnetic lead performance from Leo Woodall, best known for Netflix's One Day and HBO's The White Lotus. Also starring David Morrissey, Stephen Rea, Sidse Babett Knudsen and Quintessa Swindell, the series follows Woodall’s genius post-graduate mathematics student Edward Brooks who discovers a formula that could allow him to access every computer in the world.
He’s soon forced on the run when he uncovers a shadowy scheme to put an end to his work and teams up with agent Taylah Sanders (played by Swindell) to unravel the conspiracy. Prime Target may be one of Apple TV+’s most divisive series yet and currently holds a disappointing 29 percent Rotten Tomatoes. RadioTimes, for example, called it “so absurd, it's actually laughable.”.
IGN’s scathing review reads: “Eventually, Prime Target begins to buckle under the weight of its ambition. The tension dissipates as the story meanders, weighed down by superficial drama and a lack of compelling new plot points. “While there are moments of genuine intrigue – particularly in the way the writers weave Edward’s work into the main storyline – these moments are too fleeting to sustain momentum.”.
