If you're a fan of sci-fi dramedies, then Netflix's Sense8 should be next on your list to binge-watch. Brainchild of the Wachowskis (the minds behind The Matrix trilogy) and J. Michael Straczynski (creator of Babylon 5), Sense8 weaves together the narratives of eight individuals from different corners of the globe who inexplicably find themselves intertwined mentally, physically, and emotionally.
These eight can sense and interact with each other, but the reason remains a mystery. As they form a 'cluster' of sensates, their journey to unravel the mystery is guided by a cryptic man named Jonas who emerges from the shadows to unite them. While this is going on, another character known as 'Whispers' and his organisation are hell-bent on tracking down the sensates to either capture or kill them. What follows is two seasons packed with gripping drama that left fans hooked..
Even a decade after its release, Sense8's Rotten Tomatoes score of 86% attests to the fact that audiences recognised the unique brilliance of this show. After its short run on Netflix, Sense8 was axed in 2017 to the dismay of fans everywhere. Enough pressure was put on Netflix that they ended up creating a finale for the show to resolve some of the storylines.
Come 2018, Sense8 got a 2-hour sendoff, though die-hard fans were left wanting, insisting that the series deserved a full-fledged new season to cover its ambitious scope . Over on Reddit, you'll still find fans lamenting the show's cancellation: "I'm just rewatching after a year and I'm still completely blown away by this show. I just can't believe it was cancelled. it's such a beautiful piece of work that explores relationships and sexuality and real life experiences. It's by far the most diverse show I've watched in terms of cast as well as the characters' race, sexuality, and gender representation. It's incredible, yet it was cancelled due to 'budget costs' and 'low viewership'.".
