Asda has regained its top spot as cheapest UK supermarket for a larger shop. Which? compared the prices for a trolley of 210 items in January 2025. Asda came out cheapest at £518.90, beating Tesco with a Clubcard by £10.11 (£529.01). Waitrose was the most expensive on average, with the bigger shop costing £592.34. Aldi and Lidl are not included in this comparison as they have a smaller range of products compared to the other supermarkets. However, Aldi was once again named the cheapest supermarket for a price comparison of 100 items. The total price of a weekly shop at Aldi came in at £185.83 – just behind budget rival Lidl where the same shop came to £186.59 with Lidl Plus and £186.62 without loyalty scheme prices.

Waitrose was also named most expensive for the smaller shop, where the total bill came in at £242.91. The new research from Which? marks 15 months that Aldi has been crowned the cheapest supermarket by the consumer champion. Aldi was also named the overall cheapest supermarket of the year in 2024. The list of 100 items included both branded and own-brand items, such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk and butter.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, said: “Our latest monthly analysis once again sees Aldi crowned as the UK’s cheapest supermarket, however, Lidl remains hot on its rival’s heels. Asda has also made up some ground after slipping back in our rankings in recent months. “With people still feeling the effects of food inflation, they are likely looking to cut costs where they can. Our analysis shows that by switching supermarkets consumers could save up to 23%, highlighting the advantages of shopping around where possible.".

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “January can feel like an incredibly long month, with many shoppers feeling the pinch after the festive season and many more striving towards savings goals for the New Year. We’re proud to continue to offer shoppers the best quality products at the lowest possible prices.”. Try swapping more expensive branded goods for cheaper supermarket-own labels. This is also known as the “Downshift” challenge and it is estimated you could save around 30% on your food bill. Next, don’t just stick to one aisle in the supermarket.

You can often find cheaper versions of the same products in the world foods and baby sections. Another tip is to avoid shopping at your local convenience store if you can - these are always more expensive than going to a big shop. Finally, make sure you're signed up to loyalty schemes so you can earn points and personalised discounts on your shops, and keep an eye out for those yellow sticker deals.
