Rangers have demanded answers from the SFA over the non-award of a penalty in Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup Final defeat to Celtic. Manager Philippe Clement claimed his side should have had a spot-kick when Liam Scales pulled back Vaclav Cerny three minutes into extra-time, with the game finely poised at 3-3.
Still images showed that the pull continued into the penalty box, with former referee Bobby Madden stating on social media that it was ‘100 per cent a penalty kick’ before expressing surprise that the VAR officials failed to upgrade a free-kick to a spot-kick.
A decision which sparked fury amongst Rangers directors, shareholders, management and supporters, Mail Sport understands that new Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart has now spoken to the Scottish FA to seek an explanation over the failure of VAR Alan Muir and assistants Frank Connor and Andrew Dallas to recommend the award of a penalty to referee John Beaton.
‘I don’t know if you saw the images back, but my phone is overloaded with the penalty situation with Cerny,’ said boss Clement after the game. Liam Scales fouled Vaclav Cerny at Hampden on Sunday, with a free-kick awarded. However, Rangers believe the foul was committed in the penalty box.
Now, new Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart has contacted the SFA over the decision. ‘I get hundreds of messages now about that. That’s also a really decisive moment in the game.’. Asked if he had spoken to Beaton afterwards, the Belgian absolved the match referee of any blame.
