Peter Wright has dismissed retirement talk by insisting he could defeat Luke Litter and Luke Humphries at the World Darts Championship. The 54-year-old has sailed into the third round at Alexandra Palace and is eager to clinch his third world title. On Tuesday, Wright secured his spot in the next stage by beating Wesley Plaisier 3-1. This has set up a clash with Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena.
Despite enduring rocky performances during 2024, 'Snakebite' believes he's hitting his stride just in time for the World Championship at Ally Pally. He first won the tournament in 2020 and regained the title two years later. After his latest victory, Wright hit out at those who had hinted he should leave the sport or join the senior circuit. 'Snakebite' is adamant that he can beat anyone in the tournament, including current champion Humphries and former finalist Littler.
Asked if he ever doubted his ability to bounce back, Wright answered: "No. People say, 'You should be retiring, you should be going to the old gits' thing.' I'm not ready for that yet. I'm ready to upset Luke Littler. I'm here to upset Luke Humphries.".
As for his goal at Ally Pally, Wright didn't hesitate: "Obviously, win it. The form wasn't there, but I believe I can win it.". Humphries and darts prodigy Littler, 17, are tipped to shine once again, with Wright revealing that the two players help motivate him. Yet, he confidently predicts that Humphries will lose to darts legend Raymond van Barneveld as Wright eyes an all-time classic with 'Barney' later in the competition.
