Peter Wright has boldly predicted that defending champions Luke Humphries will be knocked out in the next round World Darts Championship. Wright picked up a scrappy 3-1 win over Wesley Plaisier to book his spot in the third round at Alexandra Palace. The two-time world champion now faces a third-round matchup against Dutch World No. 36 Jermaine Wattimena, with another win potentially securing a last-16 tie with the defending champion.

However, the Scot has boldly predicted that Humpries will not reach that stage of the competition and could see himself instead facing Raymond van Barneveld for a spot in the quarters. However, the 54-year-old also knows he will need to up his own levels of performance if he is to cash in on any potential shock eliminations.

‘I played rubbish, but all I heard was these guys getting behind me,’ he admitted after his win. ‘I didn’t want to let them down, I didn’t wan to let my family down.’. ‘But I believe that I’ve got the game. My practice was better when I won it and I told you I was going to come and win it.

‘That’s how I feel and I just played absolutely rubbish up there but I’m through to after Christmas and that’s all that counts. ‘Luke Humphries and Luke Littler drive me on as I know I can still compete with them. I actually know I can be better than them.

‘But I believe Barney will beat Luke (Humphries) and then me and Barney will have the best game ever you’ve seen on that stage. Barney get your finger out.’. Elsewhere on Tuesday evening, Fallon Sherrock was beaten 3-2 by Ryan Meikle who will go on to play Luke Littler in the second round.
