A Premier League cult-hero is now a free agent after being released by his latest club. The defender, now 37, returned to Brazil in 2021 after after a 14-year spell in England, Portugal and France. However, the Brazilian is now on the search for a new club after being released by Flamengo - a decision he was not informed about.

David Luiz didn't hold back after he found it he would not be part of the Flamengo's 2025 plans via Instagram. 'This is not good. There are only two ways: either it is intentional or amateurish. There is no other way,' he said. 'It was not what I wanted, but from the bottom of my heart I wish Flamengo good luck. Getting there is never easy and Flamengo deserves success.'.

A Premier League cult-hero is now a free agent after being released by his latest club. David Luiz has slammed Flamengo's 'amateurish' decision to release him via social media. At club level, the 37-year-old defender has a CV to envy with a host of trophy wins to boast.

According to BRG365, Luiz was released due to his age, physical decline and Flamengo's need to inject their squad with younger players. His agent has revealed fellow Brazilian sides Fortaleza and Corinthians are interested in the veteran defender. Luiz re-joined boyhood club Flamengo in 2021 after his contract at Arsenal expired - and he went on to enjoy success in South America.

He made 132 matches for the side in his second spell and helped them win the Copa Libertadores, the Copa do Brasil twice and the Campeonato Carioca. At club level, Luiz has a CV to envy with a host of trophy wins to boast - including the Champions League, the Europa League, the Premier League title and the FA Cup - plus a clean sweep of silverware in France.
