Angry residents who haven't had their rubbish collected since before Christmas are being blamed by their own councillor who says their badly parked cars are the issue. Black bin bags are piled high and rats have been spotted in the Huddersfield street after a stand off between the binmen and those living there, many of whom have sent letters and photos to Kirklees Council complaining. According to Yorkshire Live the rubbish had not been collected in Hawthorne Terrace at all in 2035.
Kirklees councillor Moses Crook has now blamed the residents' on-street parking, saying their cars have blocked access for the bin crews to reach the street. He's said the residents have been sent letters regarding this. One resident who sent in pictures of the pile up said: "The rubbish has been there just before Christmas and still has not been removed. It is attracting rats and cats go in it and looks very untidy.".
Councillor Crook, Cabinet Member for Transport and Deputy Council Leader, said: “Bin crews have made multiple attempts to collect waste from Hawthorne Terrace Crosland, Huddersfield. However, on-street parking has obstructed access, preventing our bin wagons from reaching the street. Residents have been informed of the access issues via letters and visits from council officers, however bin wagons have not yet been successful in gaining full access to the street.”.
Today it was revealed that a UK council is set to become the first in the country to collect black bins just once a month - sparking backlash from residents. According to documents which leaked in November, bin collections in Bristol could be reduced to save millions of pounds.
