Rachel Reeves has urged Labour MPs that the Government must accelerate its efforts to boost growth, ahead of a pivotal speech she is set to deliver later this week. Labour has prioritized expanding the economy as its top priority in Government, but the Chancellor has faced scrutiny over her plans since the beginning of the year, amid lacklustre growth figures and rising borrowing costs.
Arriving at the weekly meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) in Westminster on Monday evening, Reeves appeared optimistic, focusing on growth. After commending Cabinet ministers for their efforts in "kick-starting economic growth", she emphasized that the Government "must go further and faster" due to the pressures of the cost of living. She said: "The only way we can turn this around is through economic growth.".
On Wednesday, Reeves is expected to deliver a speech centred on economic growth, recounting the Government's existing initiatives and unveiling new policies in her quest for the growth necessary to implement Labour's plans. Addressing Labour MPs, she described her upcoming speech as focusing on "economic growth built on the platform of stability", cautioning that there were "no easy routes out".
She stated: "There are always reasons for Government to say no." Reflecting on her six months as Chancellor, she noted that the Government had become accustomed to saying no, and emphasized the need for change, saying: "We must start saying yes.". She has also made similar remarks in recent days when questioned about speculation surrounding the potential approval of various infrastructure projects, including the contentious third runway at Heathrow Airport. However, she has refrained from directly commenting on the matter.
