Rory McIlroy believes LIV Golf's decision to replace Greg Norman as CEO is a good move, after issuing high praise on the shoulders on the league's new boss Scott O'Neil. LIV confirmed on Wednesday that Norman's stint as the man in charge of the breakaway circuit had come to an end, with the O'Neil the man tasked with taking on the role. McIlroy - who has been a previous critic of both the LIV setup and Norman in the past - did have some kind words for the departing CEO.

He told reporters: "Greg took a lot of flack the first couple of years. He is probably one of the only guys in golf who could have taken on that role. He got off the ground and you have to commend him for that, now it is time for someone with a bit more experience to take over.".

McIlroy has not always spoken so highly of the former world No. 1, having previously called for Norman to step aside from his role in order for the PGA Tour to peacefully co-exist with their LIV rivals. "I think he just needs to exit stage left," the Northern Irishman send just over two years ago.

“He’s made his mark, but I think now is the right time to sort of say, ‘Look, you’ve got this thing off the ground, but no one is going to talk unless there’s an adult in the room that can actually try to mend fences’.” The man taking over is someone McIlroy more than aware of in O'Neil, after the former Philadelphia 76ers boss appeared at The Showdown in December where McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler took on Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
