Rory McIlroy could not help but heap praise onto Tiger Woods, despite losing out to the 82-time PGA Tour winner on his TGL debut on Monday night. McIlroy's Boston Common were playing at the SoFi Center for the first time, and fell to defeat as Woods and his Jupiter Links teammates secured a dramatic 4-3 win. It was a far from ideal start for McIlroy, who will have been looking forward to his opening match as a co-founder.

The four-time major champion helped launch the simulator league alongside Woods, making Monday's clash between Boston Common and Jupiter Links one of the most eagerly anticipated on the fixture list. Despite the loss, McIlroy showed his appreciation for his business partner in the aftermath, claiming without Woods there would be no TGL in the world of men's professional golf. Yeah, it's amazing. I don't think anyone can underestimate the impact that he's had on our game," said McIlroy.

"And the impact that he's had on all of us as professional golfers. Would TGL exist if Tiger wasn't around for 20 years? Probably not." McIlroy himself has become one of the biggest stars of his generation on the golf course, and has thus created a close bond with Woods.

Whilst the pair have developed both a professional and personal relationship in recent years, McIlroy still sees the 15-time major champion as a hero. "It's amazing to go up and to compete against one of your heroes," the four-time major champion continued.

"I've shared the course with him many times, and I've been in a couple of final groups with him, and he has just as much intensity out there tonight as he does when he's trying to win a major championship or trying to finish off a golf tournament. He was feeling it out there, and it was really cool to see.".
