Jose Fonte has revealed the one role that could see Ruben Amorim ditch his Manchester United plans - due to the benefits he and his family would enjoy. Despite his current efforts to revive their Premier League fortunes, the Old Trafford faithful have watched with bated breath as Amorim's squad lingers in an uncomfortable 13th spot. His side are fresh off a bitter defeat to Crystal Palace which spelled their seventh league defeat at home of the season.
While supporters hope Amorim will prove to be successful, former Southampton captain Fonte has dropped a bombshell about a national team job which could lure him away. Speaking to BoyleSports about Premier League Betting, the 41-year-old stated: "It's every manager's dream to coach their national team, that will be the same for Ruben Amorim. What an incredible experience that is for any coach. "It also gives you the opportunity to not have to work every day and every session, you have more time with your family and to prepare your plans. There is still work to be done in qualification and tournaments, but what an experience to lead your country to a European Championship or a World Cup," reports the Manchester Evening News.
Fonte has hailed the Portugal national team coaching role as the "biggest honour" a coach could have. He hinted that Amorim might be in contention for the job, especially with Roberto Martinez's contract set to expire after the 2026 World Cup, opening a potential opportunity. Fonte, now plying his trade at Casa Pia, shares a connection with Amorim as it was the latter's first managerial post upon hanging up his boots in 2017. While Amorim's coaching trajectory has largely been on the upswing, he's facing challenges in elevating United to their desired status.
United, having notched three consecutive victories, stumbled with a recent defeat at home to the Eagles. They're set to host Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, before locking horns with Premier League rivals Tottenham in a pivotal encounter on Sunday.
