Former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has confessed to being taken aback by Ruben Amorim's brutally frank press conferences and interviews. Since his appointment in November, the 40-year-old hasn't minced his words with the press. In just three months, he's labelled the current squad as potentially "the worst in the club's history" and even quipped that he'd choose 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital over Marcus Rashford at this moment.
Despite his razor sharp words, United's performances have still left plenty to be desired. Yet, in comparison with his predecessors, many have found Amorim's frankness refreshing. While United's showings on the pitch haven't been particularly striking under the Portuguese head coach, Hargreaves has acknowledged that Amorim's approach has caught his attention, even if the United boss' words do perhaps go overboard at times.
In an interview with Manchester Evening News, while speaking on behalf of TNT Sports to promote watching live sport in pubs, Hargreaves said: "I think he felt they would be further along. "But there's been a lot of players and managers who have come over there and found it challenging. I think, eventually, they'll get it right.
"I really like him, I think he is an amazing communicator for a guy who is also speaking English as a second language. He tries to communicate, if anything, he is probably being too open. "I think that's a sign of respect on his behalf to be so open. But this league is more demanding than the one he is in and he is learning quickly. But, United, as brilliant of a club as it is, one of the biggest clubs in the world, there are a lot of issues there, on and off the pitch.
